Hello detectives,

Extensions are due today! All extensions must be in the collection's moderation queue by Friday 15 May 11:59pm Eastern to avoid incurring the extension default penalty. [ In your timezone + Countdown ]

As mentioned before:

No further extension dates will be given (pinch hitters who claimed in the last two weeks leading up to Friday 1 May are exempted). Extenuating circumstances will be treated on a case-by-case basis.

If you default on your extension, or I have to default you because you are a no-show, you will be required to complete a make-up gift to participate in the next round. (These are due before the next round's sign-ups.) If you need to default, please press 'default' on your assignment.

Please ensure all drafts are submitted. If your work remains a draft at the deadline, you will be considered a no-show and defaulted.

All works must be completed. If your work is chaptered, all chapters must be posted by the deadline. Adding chapters after the exchange is over is not allowed for this exchange and breaks the minimum participation requirements.

All works submitted must be able to stand on their own if the collection opened after you won the lottery and moved to an island without WiFi for the rest of time.

Please ensure your author's notes do not identify you and are not self-deprecating. I will not approve works until these are removed, and you may be considered a no-show if this is not amended after I request it be removed.

Pinch hitters who claimed a request after Friday 1 May who need extensions will have their requests treated on a case-by-case basis. (I don't have any further extension deadlines.) The assignment deadline has passed!

Extensions:

We have many extensions across the agency. Happy creating and giving those fabulous works a final touch!

Extensions are due on Friday 15 May at 11:59pm EDT. [ In your timezone + Countdown ]

No further extension dates will be given (pinch hitters who claimed in the last two weeks leading up to Friday 1 May are exempted). Extenuating circumstances will be treated on a case-by-case basis.

If you requested an extension via email and did not hear back from me, please reply to this post with your AO3 username and recipient's AO3. There is a chance I replied and your email has eaten my response, or I filed it away by accident while believing I had responded. Please reach out before Monday 4 May.

If you default on your extension, or I have to default you because you are a no-show, you will be required to complete a make-up gift to participate in the next round. (These are due before the next round's sign-ups.)

If you receive an extension and have extenuating circumstances between Friday 1 May and Friday 15 May, please reach out. I don't need the details (give me an elevator pitch of context) and we can work out a new deadline date that works with the exchange's current timelines.

Pinch hitters who claim a request after Friday 1 May who need extensions will have their requests treated on a case-by-case basis. (I don't have any further extension deadlines.) Extensions won't be given to anyone who was assigned a request before Friday 1 May (excluding pinch hitters who claimed in the two weeks leading up to that date).

Defaults:

I will default anyone who has not completed their gift or who has submitted a draft. Completed gifts that can stand on their own in the instance you win the lottery, acquire a Wi-Fi-less island and move there are required at the assignment deadline.

Repeated no-shows may be banned from participating in the next round.

Non-guaranteed gifts becoming guaranteed gifts:

Participants who chose to sign up with less than 3 unique fandoms and who do not have a gift have until Friday 15 May at 11:59pm EDT to add additional fandoms to their request [ In your timezone + Countdown ].

I will not be updating any requests after this date. This is so I can manage pinch hits in the post-deadline phase of the exchange.

These fandoms need to be unique and not subfandoms to qualify, i.e., if your request only consists of Doctor Who 2005, Doctor Who 1963 and WandaVision, you do not meet the minimum unique fandom requirements.

If you are a participant who has not requested a minimum of 3 unique fandoms who wants to be guaranteed a gift in the post-deadline stage of the exchange, you will need to meet the following criteria:

have completed a gift for the exchange
have not received a gift (not having a gift means you are either a pinch hit (as part of our existing slate or post-deadline slate) or your creator has an extension)

You are welcome to add words or panels to your gift as you see fit. Works must meet the minimum requirements for comics, fic and podfic.

If you don't intend to edit your gift because it's already polished to your satisfaction, you can sit back, relax, and perhaps look at our active pinch hits during this time! (Post-deadline pinch hits will be posted in approximately 24 hours.)

I will be defaulting anyone who is a no-show and you may be banned from participating in the next round. If you were a no-show last year and are a no-show this year, you may be banned. If you want to participate in the next round, you will need to complete a make-up assignment if you are a no-show twice in a row.

I will not be emailing participants to check whether they are submitting works. If you do not submit a work, ask for an extension, or default, you will be considered a no-show.

What comes after the assignment deadline passes:

You can keep editing your assignment after you submit it. Please ensure you submit a completed work. A completed work is a work that can stand on its own if you happen to win the lottery and purchase an island with no Wi-Fi and immediately move there.

For full transparency, I will be AFK for the deadline and won't be actioning anything until it's past 9am on Sunday 3 May AEST [ In your timezone. ].

What does this mean for you? I won't be immediately actioning things and you have a little wriggle room in submitting your completed gifts, but I ask that this is not taken advantage of! There is one caveat: If you need a few extra hours because of timezone or because-it's-a-workday reasons, please email me to let me know. You will not receive a timely reply, but I ask so that I know it's intentional and that you've read this post and understand that you need to get your assignment in. If your work is not in the collection by the time I start mod work (see time above), you will be mod-defaulted and considered a no-show. Please aim to get works in via the assignment deadline time.

I will publish a post declaring our assignment deadline has passed and a reminder regarding participants who do not have a minimum of 3 unique fandoms that they have until Friday 15 May at 11:59pm Eastern to add fandoms to become eligible for a guaranteed gift. These fandoms need to be unique and not subfandoms to qualify, i.e., if your request is Doctor Who 2005, Doctor Who 1963 and WandaVision, you do not meet the minimum unique fandom requirements.

Post-deadline pinch hits will be posted after Friday 1 May, so you will have time to decide whether you want to be guaranteed a gift. If you do not complete your assignment, I will not update your request to meet the minimum of 3 unique fandoms and you will not be a pinch hit.

Treats for pinch hitters do not need to meet our minimum requirement for a completed gift. That means it can be a scene/snippet from solving a case rather than a case being solved from beginning to end. (One panel for art will be accepted. Podfic that records a drabble will be accepted. Fic that's a total of 500, 1,000, etc. words will be accepted.)

The collection is moderated. I cannot access drafts, so please be sure to press "submit" when your work is completed.

I will review these to ensure that they match the request and meet the bare minimum requirements (i.e. completed work, no copy/pastes of the same word over and over, etc.). If you find your work is sitting in the moderation queue for more than three days, please email me your AO3 name and the title of your work so I can check to see if I have simply misread it as a draft.

Once your work has been accepted, you are welcome to continue editing it until the assignment deadline. I will only be accepting works that are completed, so please do not mistake this to mean that you can submit a half-created piece of work. It needs to be complete and able to go live at any moment!

Please ensure you do not accidentally delete half your assignment as I may not be able to catch this at the time of reveals. (Save a copy of your assignment somewhere!)

You are allowed to gift to the collection a work that fits a fandom and relationship that was nominated but not requested. (If you are aware of my AO3, please do not add me as a recipient to it.) Please make sure to leave a comment in your author's note that this is a gift for the collection so I know not to email you asking if you forgot to add your recipient. (Once accepted, feel free to remove your author's note.)

We have an extension deadline, which is Friday 15 May at 11:59pm EDT. This is the only extension that will be given. (Extenuating circumstances are excepted. Pinch hits taken after this deadline may receive an extension depending on where we are at in the last phase.)

Daring detectives, we have approximately two days left until sign-ups close for our second round of Casefic Exchange! We'll be closing our doors to new and returning recruits and cases on Sunday 1 February. [ In your timezone + Countdown ]

Below is a checklist to help you get your t's crossed and your i's dotted before assignments are sent out:

If you're interested in signing up, please refer to our sign-up guidelines!

Please make sure you make yourself matchable as a creator. One of the easiest ways to do this is to look at the the sign-up summary, requests summary and AO3 app.

Please remember that you are required to request 3 unique fandoms to be guaranteed a gift. Requesting variations of Star Wars, for example, does not qualify.

If your requests are 1. Star Wars: Original Trilogy, 2. Star Wars: Prequel Trilogy, 3. Andor, 4. Mandalorian, you are not guaranteed a gift. If you request in addition 5. Enola Holmes, 6. Six of Crows, you have met the minimum of 3 unique fandoms requirement.

Please also make sure that you include casefic likes in your sign-up. If you're needing some inspiration on what you could prompt, I've compiled a list of prompts for you to refer to.

Please make sure you have a few different ones so your creator has a variety of inspiration to pull from (i.e., not just mentioning you want a murder mystery, but also including a heist and missionfic if those are things you're interested in).

Check that the email you have attached to your AO3 account is up to date, and that you've whitelisted gumshoeagency@gmail.com so you can receive very important emails from me!

This is your last chance to finalise your sign-up! Please make sure you've requested all that you want (keeping our maximum number of requests in mind), offered what you're excited to create, included active links if you've added a letter, and checked your DNWs.

Lucifer (TV) — Does it belong in DC's Arrowverse?

For those familiar with Lucifer (TV), do you think this show should be considered under the DC Arrowverse umbrella? I'm only familiar with Lucifer's involvement in the Crisis on Infinite Earths crossover event and the ramifications of that. I'm happy to keep it separate, but I wanted to check in with nominators/interested parties to see if it should go under our DCTV umbrella.

Nomination guidelines

You can nominate up to 10 fandoms with 10 relationships (this includes characters, relationships, and groups) each.

All nominations must be disambiguated with the name of the canon after the ship/group/character, e.g., "Veronica Mars/Logan Echolls (VMars)", "Solo: Joe Goldberg (You TV)", "Solo: The Crows (Six of Crows Series)", "Fred Jones & Daphne Blake & Velma Dinkley & Shaggy Rogers & Scooby-Doo (Scooby-Doo Cartoon)".

Please avoid nominating "All Media Types" and "& Related Fandoms".

Crossovers belong under "Crossover Fandom".

Please ensure you properly capitalise your tags, otherwise we will either fix them or reject them.

Please remember that you do not have to nominate canons that are investigative in nature. We will accept any canon! The work created for the request needs to involve an investigation, so please nominate what you're eager to receive and/or offer.

Please remove diacritics (or accent letters) from nominations to help us avoid having accidental duplications. We won't be querying or changing these, but it's a preference to make it easier to search for tags if we need to move or edit them.

Disambiguations

Disambiguations help us identify which canon a character, relationship, or group belongs to, and are mandatory as part of your nominations. These assist us greatly in the backend, and also allow requesters and creators to know which version of a character is nominated, especially for large fandoms with various mediums or character versions.

You are welcome to abbreviate the fandom name when nominating your characters/relationships/groups to save space, although please make the abbreviation distinct for someone who is canon blind, i.e. for The Hunger Games, you could use "THG - Collins" and "THG Movies". If your tag goes wandering, we want to be able to put it back in its rightful place.

We have no restrictions on rarity or media on fandoms. You are more than welcome to nominate a very popular fandom or very rare fandom.

For more specific canon types:

RPF: RPF is permitted. Non-famous family members and under 18s are not eligible. We will not be allowing nominations for world leaders and reserve the right to reject any RPF nomination that we feel will cause distress to our participants.

Original characters in non-original canons: You may nominate Canon Character/Original Character(s) and Canon Character & Original Character(s). You are welcome to be as specific or as broad as you wish, e.g. "Veronica Mars/Original Female Character (VMars)" or "Abed Nadir & Original Male Character (Community)".

We highly encourage you to ensure your nomination specifies the gender of the OC unless you're interested in receiving a fanwork with any gender, i.e., "Misty Quigley & Original Character (Yellowjackets)" is broad and unspecific, and means your creator will be allowed to define the gender of the OC. If you are interested in a specific gender for the OC, please nominate this specifically, i.e. "Misty Quigley & Original Female Character (Yellowjackets)".

We will not accept participants who try to box their creator into a specific type of relationship using their optional details in their sign-up. Please keep that in mind while nominating.

Original Works: These must be nominated under "Original Work" in the format "Character Type/Character Type", "Character Type & Character Type" and "Solo: Character Type", e.g. "Female Detective/Male Criminal Mastermind (OW)", "Female Pirate Captain & Male Privateer (OW)", "Solo: Female Archeologist (OW)", etc.

This should be submitted either via email at gumshoeagency@gmail.com or on this post. Recursive nominations that fail to provide this proof will be rejected. Please ensure you include "DFE" ("Disambiguated for Exchanges") in the disambiguation.

Crossovers: Crossovers are permitted. These should be nominated under "Crossover Fandom" with the fandom name for each character in brackets, e.g. "Taissa Turner (Yellowjackets) & Michelle Jones (MCU)" or "Solo: Elmo (Sesame Street) in Home Alone (Movies)".

Threesomes/moresomes: These types of relationships are permitted, whether they are romantic or platonic. (Romantic is to be signified with an "/" and platonic with "&".) If you are nominating characters that do not exist in the same canon, please ensure you do so under "Crossover Fandom".

Canon/Reader: We do not allow Reader/Canon Character to be nominated in any form.

Creator's Choice of Fandom: We do not accept any CCOF for this exchange.

Assassin's Creed: Please nominate Assassin's Creed under "Assassin's Creed - All Media Types".

Buffy: The Vampire Slayer and Angel: The Series: Please nominate these under "Buffyverse (TV)".

If your nomination involves one or more Dreaming of Sunshine characters and one or more Naruto/Boruto characters, nominate this under "Crossover Fandom" with the proper disambiguations.

Star Trek: Please nominate these via their separate shows and the Alternate Original Series, such as "Star Trek: Alternate Original Series ", "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine", "Star Trek: Discovery", "Star Trek: Enterprise", "Star Trek: Picard", "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds", "Star Trek: The Next Generation", etc. Crossovers between these shows must be nominated under "Crossover Fandom" and correctly disambiguated,

Star Wars:

Tag formats

We accept:

"/" nominations signifying romantic and/or sexual relationships, i.e. "Logan Echolls/Veronica Mars (VMars)".

"&" nominations signifying platonic and gen relationships, i.e. "Logan Echolls & Veronica Mars (VMars)".

"Solo:" nominations will work in two ways: (1) signifying a single character to be the main focus of the fanwork, i.e. "Solo: Veronica Mars (VMars)" and (2) signifying a group, such as "Solo: The Muppets (Sesame Street)", where one or more Muppets will be the central focus of the work as chosen by the creator.

"Solo: Character (Fandom A) in Fandom B" and "Solo: Relationship (Fandom A) in Fandom B" — This signifies a crossover where the nominated character (or relationship) from Fandom A is visiting or already exists in the world of Fandom B. Please disambiguate Fandom B if there are multiple versions of this fandom available.

You may nominate tags in the format of "Character A/Character B & Character C" to request two characters in a romantic/sexual relationship having a platonic interaction with a third character. Please ensure you disambiguate correctly.

Tag examples:

Daphne Blake/Fred Jones (Scooby Doo Cartoon) — The fanwork you will receive will be primarily about this romantic/sexual relationship interacting with the exchange's theme.

Daphne Blake & Fred Jones (Scooby Doo Cartoon) — The fanwork you will receive will be primarily about characters interacting as friends, neighbours, family, acquaintances, enemies, etc. in a platonic/non-sexual way with the exchange's theme.

Solo: Scooby Doo (Scooby Doo Cartoon) in Sesame Street — The fanwork will be a crossover about/centred around Scooby Doo visiting or already existing within the world of Sesame Street and interact with the exchange's theme. This will be nominated under "Crossover Fandom".

Elmo (Sesame Street) & Mystery Inc. (Scooby Doo Cartoon) — The fanwork you will receive will be a crossover work in which Elmo and one or more of the members of Mystery Inc. meet or have some kind of pre-existing platonic relationship and interact with the exchange's theme. This will be nominated under "Crossover Fandom".

Daphne Blake/Fred Jones (Scooby Doo cartoon) & Elmo (Sesame Street) — The fanwork you will receive will be a crossover work in which Fred and Daphne have a romantic/sexual relationship and platonically interact with Elmo with the exchange's theme. This will be nominated under "Crossover Fandom".

Group nominations

"Solo: Group" tags mean "one or more of this group" whether or not they have "any" in front of them.

If you request an ambiguous group, i.e. "Solo: The Avengers", we will assume any possible member(s) of that group fulfil the request. If you want specific members, please nominate them in the "Character A & Character B & Character C" format. (Please select the characters you absolutely want.)

You may request "Any" of a character type, e.g., "Mikhaila Ilyushin/Any Female Talos I Employee". Please make sure any important information is within the Any character tag.

Where there is ambiguity created by a nomination, we will likely side with the creator. If you want to ensure you get specific characters, then nominate them by name. If you request "Veronica Mars (VMars) & The Avengers (MCU)" and include in your DNWs that you do not want Bruce Banner, this may not be enforced.

Transfer 2025 nominations over

One of our fellow detectives asked about this as an option for 2026's round, which I thought was a great idea! I apologise to anyone this may blindside, as I hadn't considered it and didn't build it into the schedule.

I'm allowing transfers from last year's tagset into 2026's tagset. This means these nominations will not count toward a nomination slot. I will batch load these into the 2026 tagset, provided the request follows the guidelines below.

Each person can only request a maximum of 10 fandoms to be transferred.

Anonymous comments must sign their comments with their AO3 usernames.

If you do not provide the information in the format specified, I will not be transferring your selected tags over.

Please reply to this post with your fandom and the tags you want transferred. Please format it as follows: Fandom,Relationship,Relationship,Relationship, with each fandom on a new line. Please do not change these tags and do not add spaces. The tags must be exactly as they appear in the 2025 tagset.

If you can title your comment's subject with "Transfer", that will be very helpful for me! This isn't mandatory, and I will process these transfers even without a subject line. (Please don't stress if you forget!)

Hello detectives,

caseficexchange is returning early this year, with nominations opening either mid-January or the first week of February (date TBD shortly). Full disclosure: I'm busy with study in July, August and September, so I'm trying to avoid having a lot of mod work during this period. Last year's schedule had a lot of mod work fall at this time.

Casefic prompt ideas

I asked in the wrap-up 2025 feedback post about adding broad prompt freeforms to the sign-up so people could click the types of casefic they're interested in. I'm still deciding if I want to add these (it will be a non-matching element).

Whichever way we go, I wanted to refine the existing list of casefic ideas that I came up with for last year's round. You can see these here. For anyone interested in helping me create a refined list, what are some casefic ideas I could list in the sign-up guidelines for 2026? Is there anything I missed? Is there anything I didn't miss but you want to flag so I don't exclude it?
